Taoiseach To Visit Flooded Areas In The Midlands

Laois, Offaly and Westmeath have been hit by flooding.

The Taoiseach will be visiting areas affected by flooding in Westmeath this afternoon. 

Leo Varadkar will be in Athlone from half past twelve before traveling to Carrick On Shannon later in the day. 

Minster for the OPW, Athlone's Kevin Boxer Moran, has this update from Athlone:
 

More farms and homes along the river Shannon could flood due to increased rainfall over the next two days.

A status yellow alert for 20 counties has been lifted, but there's a warning of further downpours.

Heavy rain has led to flooding and dangerous driving conditions. 

In Galway, the N65 between Portumna and Loughrea is affected. 

There's also flooding on the N85 between Ennis and Ennistymon in Co Clare.

Residents and farmers along the river Shannon could be affected by flooding over the next two days due to predicted increased rainfall. 

In Athlone, Westmeath County Council has been working overnight on flood alleviation measures and crews say the Shannon could rise a further 300 milimetres.

Residents in Banagher are also reporting issues of flooding. 

Social Democrats Councillor Clare Claffey says she's aware of the very serious issue with flooding and sewage at Portavolla, Banagher and other areas. She says she's spoken to the Area Engineer and his staff are on the way to assist.

She also intends speaking with the Offaly County Council CEO about putting emergency plans in place in the area.

An emergency meeting of Birr Municipal District Members has been called.
