Three Midlands TDs Promoted To Minister For State

They join Minister Barry Cowen in the updated cabinet.

The government has been appointing Ministers of State this evening with most of the names having been revealed.

However, high profile TDs Jim O'Callaghan and Joe McHugh turned down the offer of a junior ministry.

We now know most of the Ministers of State that will be approved by the government this evening.

For Fine Gael the team is led by former Culture Minister Josepha Madigan

Promoted from the backbenches are Dublin South West TD Colm Brophy, Peter Burke from Longford Westmeath, Kildare's Martin Heydon and Sligo Leitrim TD Frankie Feighan.

Outgoing Ministers of State Damien English from Meath and Limerick's Patrick O'Donovan also retain positions.

For Fianna Fáil Meath East TD Thomas Byrne, Galway's Anne Rabbitte, Waterford's Mary Butler, Longford/Westmeath TD Robert Troy and Donegal's Charlie McConalogue have been promoted.

While the Green Party's Junior Ministries have gone to Carlow Kilkenny's Malcolm Noonan, Fingal's Joe O'Brien and Ossian Smyth from Dun Laoghaire.

High profile Fianna Fáil TD Jim O'Callaghan turned down a Ministry after being overlooked for a cabinet position, as did Fine Gael's Joe McHugh.

The Minister for Agriculture Barry Cowan says it's hard to get a national spread at cabinet but the goverment is one for everyone;
