TikTok Called Before Media Committee Over Dangerous Driving Content

Media Committee Chair Alan Kelly is urging that the move be made.

The Chair of the Media Committee has invited TikTok to appear before it in September, saying it must explain how it tackles content which glorifies crimes.

Labour's Alan Kelly says in the aftermath of the M9 tragedy, the company needs to explain to the committee how it takes steps to curb people posting content of dangerous driving for clicks and likes.

TikTok says it's removed much of this content, but some reports suggest it hasn't managed to remove them all.

This comes after a death notice was published for 16-year-old Alex McCarthy, one of the five teenagers killed in the M9 crash on Sunday.

Sinn Fein TD Joanna Byrne says social media platforms have been before the media committee multiple times in recent months:

Meanwhile, a prayer vigil will take place in Carlow later this week for the three sisters and young boy who were seriously injured in last weekend's collision on the M9.

Niamh and Alma Kinsella, Ella Hendricken, and a seven-year-old boy were seriously injured following the wrong-way crash on the motorway on Sunday.

The vigil, at St. Clare's Church, Graiguecullen, will take place at 6:30 pm this Friday.

A GoFundMe to support the family has raised almost €300,000.
