Uisce Eireann Agree To Examine Pipeline Solution For Westmeath Town

Councillor Denis Leonard is calling for the estates to be connected to active sewer lines with proper downhill flow as a long-term solution.

Uisce Éireann has agreed to urgently examine a new pipeline solution for Newpark and Newpark Court in Kinnegad following ongoing sewage and flooding problems.

The issues are being caused by sagging pipelines, which have led to sewage backing up into the estates.

The matter was discussed at last Monday’s workshop meeting of Westmeath County Council with Uisce Éireann representatives.

Councillor Denis Leonard is calling for the estates to be connected to active sewer lines with proper downhill flow as a long-term solution.

He says concerns were also raised about Killucan Manor, where tanker trucks continue servicing estates instead of permanent pipeline infrastructure:

Further discussions at the meeting highlighted growing frustration among local residents and councillors over the length of time the sewage and flooding issues have remained unresolved in Newpark and Newpark Court, Kinnegad.

Members heard that the existing pipeline infrastructure has deteriorated significantly, with sagging sections causing repeated blockages and sewage backing up into parts of the estates during periods of heavy use and rainfall.

Councillor Denis Leonard stressed that temporary responses are no longer acceptable and called on Uisce Éireann to deliver a permanent engineering solution by linking the estates into active sewer networks where proper downhill flow can be achieved.

They argued that continued maintenance and emergency responses are costing significant public money without solving the root cause of the problem.

The situation at Killucan Manor was also referenced during the discussions, where tanker trucks are still required on a regular basis to service three estates due to ongoing wastewater capacity issues.

Members described the practice as unsustainable and said investment in permanent pipeline infrastructure would provide better long-term value for taxpayers and greater reliability for residents.

An update is now expected at the next Municipal District meeting.
