Water Safety Ireland Giving Awards To Nine Midlands Gardai

The virtual ceremony gets underway from 7pm tonight.

Nine gardaí in the midlands will be recognised today by Water Safety Ireland for saving the lives of two people in the region. 

The annual awards are taking place on line at 7pm.  

Gardai Adrian Corcoran will receive a Just in Time award after getting into the River Barrow in Laois on March 8th. 

He got into the high and fast flowing water to rescue a woman who was in danger of drowning. 

He was assisted by Sgt. Mick O Connell and Garda Dave Coughlan. 

In Westmeath, Garda James Brennan will also be recognised for keeping a drowning woman above the water until he was assisted by his colleagues Breda Fahy and Tom Kelly in a boat which was pulled ashore by Athlone Gardai Aidan Hynes, Joyce O Grady and Ken Warney. 

Meanwhile, Lough Derg sub aqua diver Conal Dolan is being hailed for saving a woman from the Shannon in Athlone. 

He got into the water at the Strand and brought her back to safety. 

The emergency medical technician then checked her vital signs and put her in the recovery position. 

She has made a full recovery. 

In total 51 people were saved by resources in 32 incidents by 67 rescuers.
