Irish Water is confirming works will continue until 10pm tonight, with diversions in place due to the traffic disruption.
Residents may experience reduced water pressure or temporary outages during this period.
Customers are advised to allow 3-4 hours after repairs for full supply restoration.
Crews are on site working to resolve the issue as quickly and safely as possible.
Mains repairs are currently underway on the Dublin Road in the town.
Traffic leaving Portlaoise on the Dublin Road is being diverted at the Hospital a detour is in place. Significant delays are expected.
Motorists are advised to please consider an alternative route, where possible.
