A similar project is underway in Monaghan.
A Westmeath councillor is working to introduce a reverse vending machine in the county.
The scheme would involve putting empty plastic bottles into the machine and receiving a voucher for a local supermarket in return.
The Green Party's Louise Heavin says a similar initiative is being piloted in Monaghan at the moment and Westmeath County Council will look at the success of that project before setting up a machine in a suitable location in Athlone.
Councillor Heavin, who's a candidate for Longford-Westmeath in the upcoming general election, says the idea is receiving a lot of support from the public and the council:
