The issue of aggressive begging was recently raised by a local councillor.
A woman has been arrested in Laois on begging charges.
Gardaí in Portlaoise arrested her in the Lyster Square area this afternoon.
Gardaí say it's in line with their ongoing work to tackle anti-social behaviour.
The woman has been charged to appear before Portlaoise District Court at a later date.
GARDA: There'll be a specially formed community policing group for the issue.
