There was a drop of over 15% in the number of new homes granted planning permission in the first half of the year.
Over 18,100 new builds were approved, down from more than 21,400 in the same period last year.
Figures from the CSO also show, over 800 houses and apartments were given the green light in the midlands between March and June 2021.
629 properties were signed off on in Westmeath, while 109 were approved in Laois and 81 were given approval in Offaly.
Nationally, 11,138 apartments and just under 7,000 houses in the first six months of 2021.
