The discovery was made on Carberry Island on Lough Ree.
Ancient human remains have been found in the midlands.
The discovery came after a man alerted Westmeath Gardaí to a skull he had found on Carberry Island on Lough Ree.
The skeletal remains were unearthed by a fallen tree.
Gardaí say the National Museum is confirming the bones are historic, and ancient.
In a statement to Midlands 103 the National Museum said the following:
“The National Museum of Ireland have been contacted by An Garda Síochána in relation to a discovery on Lough Ree. We are investigating the report in line with our responsibilities under the National Monuments Acts 1930-2014. We will provide updates on conclusion of our work and appreciate the public’s patience in this regard.”
