It's expected there will be a further increase next month.
There will be a major increase in cost of a bag of coal from tomorrow, prompting a call from a leading charity for the Government to intervene.
CPL Fuels said it was raising the price of coal, in response to an increase in the cost of materials, and the war in Ukraine.
Dundalk based fuel merchants CPL fuels, which has depots in the midlands, say retailers will have to pay an extra 4 euro 50 cents for a bag of coal from tomorrow, and this is expected to be passed on to the customer.
It's expected there will be a further increase of €2.50 per bag from April 4th.
An estimated 80,000 homes rely on coal for heating.
Alone, a charity which works with older people, is concerned that those on a fixed pension will struggle to heat their homes.
Alone CEO Sean Moynihan said most of the fuel allowance has been eaten up by the increase in energy costs.
He has called on the government to intervene to prevent a further rise in fuel poverty.
