It follows SIPTU's call for legal recognition of workers' rights to union representation amid a dispute with an Offaly medical device plant.

The union says employees at Steris Applied Sterilization Technologies in Westport are given access to these rights, while those working in Tullamore are not.

The workers have made a submission to the public consultation process on Ireland's forthcoming action plan to promote collective bargaining.

Longford Westmeath TD, Minister Peter Burke says public consultation is an important part of the journey to resolving the issue:
