The new model is being criticised by local representatives.
Growing concerns of the level of crime in a midlands town were high on the agenda in a meeting between local representatives and Gardaí yesterday.
A new Garda operating model was also up for discussion at yesterday's gathering of the Westmeath Joint Policing Committee.
Concerns were raised over increases in crime and anti social behaviour in Athlone, including rises in property crime and vehicle theft, as well as a lack of uniformed Gardaí patrolling the streets.
It comes as a new model is being introduced, with fears that Athlone will suffer.
The station in Athlone would not have a Superintendent, with the highest ranking gardaí in the barracks to be Inspectors.
Westmeath Fianna Fáil councillor, Frankie Keena is branding the loss a "downgrade" and an "insult" to the people of the town.
Councillor Keena also proposed correspondence with Garda Commissioner Drew Harris and Minister Helen McEntee on the matter:
