It's believed the blaze caught around 6pm this evening.
Emergency services are the scene of a serious bog fire in Offaly.
The blaze began at around 6pm this evening between Mount Lucas and Walsh Island.
Huge plumes of smoke are visible from a large distance.
Up to 27 firefighters, and three fire engines from Tullamore, Portarlington, and Edenderry are at the scene.
Gardaí in Tullamore are saying the fire is gradually being brought under control.
They're asking any members of the public who see smoke anywhere else to report it.
Rhode's Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel is at the scene and has captured footage of the fire:
The Offaly forecaster says easterly winds are pushing the fire westward, while he's also observed workers from Bord Na Mona workinh with diggers to ensure the fire doesn't spread further.
He says the fire is still burning on a number of fronts.
