ESB Advance Plans for New High Voltage Station In Westmeath

It's part of their wider plans and works for the county.

ESB Networks is continuing to make significant investment in infrastructure across Westmeath, with a strong focus on supporting growth in the Athlone area and enhancing network resilience across the wider region.

Plans are now at an advanced stage for a new high voltage 110kV station in Athlone, representing an investment of approximately €15 million. Expected to be delivered by 2030, the project will play a critical role in future proofing electricity capacity to meet growing housing demand, industrial development and broader economic expansion in the area.

While plans for the new station progress, ESB Networks is also strengthening the existing high voltage substation through targeted reinforcement works. Scheduled for completion later this year, the project will increase available network capacity by 50%.

Across the wider county, ESB Networks is progressing a range of investments under its PR6 capital expenditure programme. These include a €6 million upgrade of the Mullingar 110kV station and significant transformer upgrades in Kinnegad to increase capacity and support local electricity demand.

In the Coosan area, ESB Networks is upgrading exposed sections of the network from single‑phase to three‑phase supply, while extensive timber cutting programmes across the region are reducing the risk of weather related outages, particularly in rural areas.

“This programme of work is about making sure the electricity network in Westmeath keeps pace with real demand on the ground,” said Tommy Mulligan, ESB Networks Area Manager for Athlone and Longford.

“By progressing major projects such as the new Athlone 110kV station, alongside upgrades in Mullingar, Kinnegad and Coosan, we are increasing capacity and improving resilience across the network, helping to ensure a reliable power supply both now and into the future.”
