Russia Likely To Launch Major Attack On Ukraine In Days

That's according to a former midlands army ranger.

Russia is likely to launch a major offensive operation in Ukraine before the week is out, according to a former army ranger.

8% of Ukrainian territory is currently under Russian control, but Cathal Berry - who's now an independent TD for Kildare-South - says Vladimir Putin is likely to want to seize at least 50%.

Russia is now extending its recognition of independence in east Ukraine to areas controlled by Ukrainian forces.

AP is reporting the Kremlin is claiming the entirety of Luhansk and Donetsk, and not just areas controlled by Russian backed separatists.

Deputy Berry expects Ukraine will feel the full might of the Russian army within days:

The European Commission does not expect fuel supplies to be dramatically impacted by the crisis in Eastern Europe.

It comes ahead of a meeting of foreign ministers this evening, where they'll be discussing possible sanctions on Russia's financial services and energy industries.

European Commission spokesperson for Climate Action and Energy, Tim McPhie, says the EU is prepared for any shortfalls:
