Planning permission has been submitted to bring a former midlands hotel back into use.

Simco Ventures wants to convert the Phoenix Hotel on Main Street in Kinnegad into a 24-room site.

The lodge is currently unoccupied after being damaged by a fire, which the developer says is primarily cosmetic and not structural.

The existing building has 13-rooms at present, but the plans seek to convert the function room and nightclub into an additional 11-rooms.

A decision from Westmeath County Council is due in February.
