The idea has been put forward by Health Minister, Stephen Donnelly, who, in an interview with The Sunday Times, compared the damage caused by social media companies to that of smoking.
Laois Offaly Fine Gael TD, Charlie Flanagan, is criticising the proposal, and says it's counterproductive and unworkable.
He also says he's looking forward to legislative and parliamentary scrutiny of the initiative.
Minister Donnelly's idea comes just days after his party colleague, Education Minister, Norma Foley, suggested banning access to smartphones in school.
