IFA Repeat Call To Government To Oppose Mercosur Trade Deal

There's concerns over the impact on beef imports from South American markets from the IFA.

Farmers representatives are urging the government to step up its opposition within the European Union against the Mercosur trade deal.

The agreement between the EU and South America was struck last December, decades after negotiations were launched.

It now requires qualified majority support from European governments for it to be ratified.

There are concerns over the impact the importation of beef from markets like Brazil will have on the farming sector here.

Irish Farmers Association President,  Ballinakill's Francie Gorman says it's unfair:

The European Commission insists the text of the Mercosur trade deal will not be reopened.

The ratification process for the controversial EU - South America deal has been launched today.

Announcing the move, the EU Commission committed to monitoring potential market disruptions and providing supports and safeguards for the agriculture sector.
