The new monument is outside Mullingar's Columb Barracks.
Westmeath soldiers were largely forgotten after the siege of Jadotville.
That's according to Thomas Joseph Gorman who served in the 35th Battalion in the Congo in 1961.
It comes as a monument commemorating the 156 Irish peacekeeping troops who served in the siege is being unveiled today in Mullingar.
He arrived to the town in 1958 and lives there to this day.
