Whistleblower Noel McGree and his wife Antoinette handed over the keys of their Portlaoise home of 20 years yesterday morning after a re-possession order was issued.
The Irish Independent is reporting Mr McGree fell into financial arrears after he made a series of protected disclosures.
He alleges his pay was periodically cut "in error" while he was still working - he says he left his job in 2019 for a pension of just over 25 thousand euro a year because he feared for his safety.
Mr McGree claims he suffered intimidation involving a dead rat being left on the doorstep of his home, and his work locker being urinated on.
He received a formal apology from both the Department of Justice and the Irish Prison service for the treatment he received after the disclosures.
The total mortgage arears on the house his family has lost would now be in the region of 500 thousand euro.
The ex prison officer and his wife have moved into her parents home in Kilkenny, while one of his sons is staying with an uncle as he prepares to sit his leaving certificate next year.
Another son is "couch surfing" with friends.
Mr McGree issued High Court proceedings against the Irish Prison Service in 2021 with a full defence being filed by the service in June this summer.
