The Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council will be the first councillor in Ireland to be able to take maternity leave.
Legislation is expected to be signed by the President this week which will see maternity leave granted to councillors.

The Fine Gael rep will be the first to avail of the measure, and will be granted around 24 weeks of leave when it's passed.
Councillor Connell says this change removes one of the barriers that was putting women off going into politics.
