The midlands candidate in the Seanad by-election has conceded defeat.
Laois Labour Party rep Eoin Barry is among 17 contenders vying for the seat left vacant by Ivana Bacik on her election to the Dáil.
The Wolfhill man had 189 votes and a 1.4% share of the poll following the first count of votes from Trinity College graduates.
He's been thanking those who supported him and says he's looking forward to the next election.
Former Ireland rugby international Hugo MacNeill is currently topping the poll on 2,068 or 15.4%.
Psychologist Maureen Gaffney, security analyst Tom Clonan and the Green Party's Hazel Chu are not far behind after the first count.
Day two of counting is now underway.
It wasn’t to be this time around. However it was a great honour to be a candidate, I’m so grateful to everyone who voted for me or gave me a preference.
