The region has been mooted as the preferred destination for one of the first hydrogen demonstration hubs in the country.
A new energy project could put the midlands at the centre of a new era of sustainable energy exploitation.
That's one of the findings of a new feasibility study for the Rhode Green Energy Park, which could cut carbon emissions by over 1,000 tonnes annually.
The area was chosen due to the region's past experience in the energy sector, its ability to provide wind and solar resources, and the proximity to Dublin.
The study looked at the benefits of developing a one-megawatt demonstrator-scale electrolyser, which could produce up to 150 tonnes of hydrogen per year by using excess wind energy.
The Rhode Green Energy Park is earmarked to be one of the first hydrogen demonstration hubs in the country.
It's hoped a new energy project could attract more businesses to a midlands town.
