Lumcloon Energy partners with global utility giant KEPCO to deliver pioneering energy storage pilot project in Offaly
‘Project Daejeon’ includes a supercapacitor energy storage system co-located alongside liquid cooling data centre technology.
Irish company Lumcloon Energy has partnered with KEPCO, one of the world’s largest utility companies, to deliver this highly innovative new pilot project The demonstration-scale pilot project is the first of its kind in Ireland and will be located in the Rhode Green Energy Park in Co Offaly.
Lumcloon Energy, an Irish company dedicated to supporting Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon electricity system, has partnered with one of the world’s largest utility companies to develop a pioneering energy storage pilot project in Ireland.
Known as ‘Project Daejeon’, the groundbreaking pilot project will comprise a demonstration-scale supercapacitor energy storage system (SCESS), which will be the first of its kind in Ireland and among the first in Europe.
A supercapacitor, or ‘supercap’, is a technology that stores electricity and can release it very quickly when needed. Supercapacitors charge much faster than conventional battery storage technology and are designed to deliver large bursts of energy into the power grid when required.
To deliver the pilot project, Lumcloon Energy has partnered with KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) — South Korea’s national electricity utility and one of the largest power utility companies on the planet, responsible for supplying electricity to over 50 million people across an entire nation.
Supported by Enterprise Ireland, the ‘supercap’ pilot project will be located in the Rhode Green Energy Park in Co Offaly, which was established on the lands of the former ESB peat-fired power station that served the region for decades before closing in 2003.
Rhode Green Energy Park is a flagship Just Transition initiative in Co Offaly, which seeks to cluster innovative green energy projects on the former power station lands.
Plans for the pilot ‘supercap’ project have been submitted to Offaly Co Council this week.
The ‘Project Daejeon’ pilot will be co-located alongside a demonstration-scale mini-data centre that is cooled using innovative liquid cooling technology.
The data centre servers and IT infrastructure will be housed in a containerised unit that is submerged in a special cooling fluid, as opposed to using conventional cooling methods like air-conditioning.
By co-locating the supercapacitor storage system alongside a liquid cooled data centre facility, Project Daejeon will demonstrate how fast-response energy storage can support high-performance digital infrastructure, improve power stability, and reduce stress on the local electricity network.
Successful deployment would position Ireland as a leading testbed for next-generation energy technology, with the potential for wider commercial roll-out both here and in international markets.
Dr Sergiu Albu, Technical Director of Lumcloon Energy, said: “Supercapacitors represent one of the most exciting frontiers in grid-scale energy storage, and Project Daejeon gives us the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities in a real-world operational environment for the first time in Ireland.” “The integration of ultra-fast storage with an immersion-cooled data centre load is technically novel. It allows us to study how these two systems interact under live grid conditions and generate the performance data needed to support wider commercial deployment.” “Working with KEPCO’s world-class research expertise, we are confident this project will produce results that are of genuine value, not just for Ireland, but for electricity systems globally.”
Colm Kelly, Senior Economic Development Officer at Offaly Co Council, said: “Project Daejeon demonstrates the type of innovative investment that aligns with Offaly’s ambitions as a leader in the energy transition. The combination of international expertise, cutting-edge technology and local delivery highlights the strategic role that Rhode Green Energy Park can play in attracting high-value energy projects to the region.” “We welcome initiatives that support economic development while helping Ireland achieve its climate and energy security objectives.”
Eugene Mulligan, Chairman, North Offaly Development Fund, said: “The North Offaly Development Fund has long supported the transformation of the region into a centre for innovation and sustainable enterprise. Project Daejeon represents another important step in that journey, bringing world-class technology and international collaboration to North Offaly. “We are delighted to see Rhode Green Energy Park continue to attract pioneering projects that create opportunities for the local community and strengthen the region’s reputation as a clean energy hub.”
