The former Health Minister is the latest to give assurances.

There would be no logic in downgrading Portlaoise Regional Hospital, according to the Tánaiste.

The future of the hospital's emergency department has hung in the balance since a report in 2010 recommended it be scaled down.

However, Leo Varadkar is the latest government TD to offer assurances that won't happen.

He says removing the service would require enormous investment in Naas and Tallaght Hospitals:
