One local representative wants to make the idea a reality.
An Offaly councillor wants to rezone land in the county to create Ireland's first 100% green energy hub.
Fine Gael's Noel Cribbin is looking for Edenderry Power Plant to produce biomass only, and combine the energy with that coming for the one existing and three proposed wind farms in the area.
He says we need to think about the future of the power plant and our peat lands, and believes this is a viable option that can also make Edenderry a centre for green energy production.
Councillor Cribbin says the response to date has been extremely positive:
