One Dog Attack Recorded By Offaly County Council In Five Years

There are 11 breeds of dog on the restricted-breed list.

Councils across the country are recording dozens of dog attacks on humans and other animals every year. 

Irish Independent figures show hundreds of reports of attacks sent to local authorities between 2016 and 2021.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council in Dublin recorded 273 attacks over the past 5 years, while Tipperary received 206 complaints. 

Only one attack was record by the local authority in Offaly in the last five years. 

There are 11 breeds of dog on the restricted-breed list, but the incidents also involved some not on the register, like Labradors and Jack Russells. 

The DSPCA's Gillian Bird says proper leads are essential: 

Rules about 'restricted' dog breeds as a way to reduce attacks are pointless, according to a vet.

Pete 'the vet' Wedderburn believes those aren't helping - and enforcing leads would be a better way of cutting down attacks:
