The Callows have been heavily impacted by flooding throughout recent years.
A tender is due to be issued next month for an ecological consultant to carry out a "high-level environmental study" on the Shannon Callows.
The study will consider the possible impacts of the excavation of materials in the river, the longer term maintenance of the riverbed and changes in water levels.
A number of protests were held earlier this year in relation to flooding along the Shannon Callows - it's estimated around 6,000 or 7,000 acres of hay and silage were lost due to heavy rainfall during the summer.
