Eddie Fitzpatrick announced the decision to run as an Independent today.
Fianna Fáil says a desire to achieve a geographical and gender balance were behind the decision to select Claire Murray as one of its General Election candidates in Offaly.
The party has been responding to the resignation of veteran Councillor, Eddie Fitzpatrick, who's announced the decision to run as an Independent.
He claims he was overlooked by the party when selecting its election candidates.
Offaly Fianna Fáil says Mr. Fitzpatrick's decision is disappointing, and also says it would be unfortunate if his candidacy were to split the vote and prevent North Offaly from securing a TD.
In a statement to Midlands 103, Offaly Fianna Fáil says:
"Cllr Murray was selected having regard to her geographical base, her skillset and experience as a community activist and in the context of the party’s commitment to achieving greater participation of women in politics."
Councillor Fitzpatrick has served on the local authority for over 20 years as a member of the Progressive Democrats, an Independent, and with Fianna Fáil.
This will be his third attempt at running for a seat in the Dáil, after unsuccessful contests in 2011 as an Independent, and 2016 as a member of Fianna Fáil.
