12% Rise In Midlands Direct Provision Numbers

Westmeath is hosting the highest number in the midlands.

There's been a 12% increase in the number of people staying in Direct Provision centres in the Midlands.

A new report from the Irish Refugee Council shows 2,276 people stayed in Direct Privision in Laois, Offaly and Westmeath last year.

Westmeath is hosting by far the largest number at 1,205 compared to 578 in Offaly, and 493 in Laois.

As of January this year, there were 312 Direct Provision Centres located nationwide, including 159 emergency centres and 2 centres containing tented accommodation.
