Nationally, Over 30,000 commencement notices were received.
Construction began on over 400 new homes in the midlands last year.
Laois led the way in the region, with 152 commencement notices issued in 2023, according to new figures from the Department of Housing.
That's followed by 131 in Westmeath, and 129 in Offaly.
Around the country, just short of 33,000 new housing commencement notices were received by relevant authorities last year.
That's the highest on record and is up more than a fifth on 2022.
In December alone, over 3,100 notices were received, up 76% on the previous December when 1,795 were received.
