The proposal received unanimous support from councillors this week.
Chemical-based weed-killers will no longer be used to in public spaces in Offaly - on a trial basis.
A motion from the Green Party's Mark Hackett calling for the measure received unanimous support from Offaly county councillors at the local authority's monthly meeting this week.
The proposal was seconded by Social Democrat Clare Claffey.
The exact details of the trial - which will see the chemical glyphosate banned - are to be finalised at a meeting of the Climate Action SPC next Wednesday, 25th May.
Councillor Hackett says it's a crucial move in the context of the biodiversity crisis:
Delighted to say motion has passed with an allowance for transition period. It got unanimous support: I have agreed to work with SPC and DoS @offalycoco on when trial period will start. Thanks to all for support and to @CllrClareClaff for seconding. #NationalBiodiversityWeek2022 https://t.co/bhBUaHn01V
