Increased Garda Presence Planned To Tackle Abuse Of Retail Workers

Nearly 70% of workers report being abused by customers on the job.

There will be an increased Garda presence in our communities to tackle abuse towards retail workers over the next few years.

Offaly TD Tony McCormack says it's a measure under the Government's Retail Crime plan.

It follows a new survey which finds up to 70% of workers are subject to abusive behaviour from customers when on the job.

One in three says it happens at least once a week, with a third of respondents saying the abuse was targeted at  their race or ethnicity.
