The 27 year old Fine Gael rep will be taking up the reins for the year ahead.
Laois County Council has elected its youngest ever cathaoirleach.
Fine Gael’s Conor Bergin was just 25 when first elected to the local authority in 2019.
He was named first citizen this afternoon by 14 votes to 5, beating independent councillor Ben Brennan, who was elected in 2012 and has yet to chair the council.
Councillor Bergin, from Borris in Ossory, says he has a lifelong commitment to public service and believes there’s a bright future ahead for the county:
His party colleague, Councillor Willie Aird says it's very positive to have a young person elected and chairing council shows what young people are capable and how young people can be part of politics.
