The Green Quarter will be built next to the TUS Athlone campus.
The developer behind a major new student accommodation project in the midlands intends to have it ready for September 2024.
Permission was granted this week for The Green Quarter, close to the Technological University of the Shannon in Athlone.
It'll cater for 283 students, along with additional 65 houses and 62 apartments for general use.
46 student apartments will consist of one three-bed unit, six four-bed, and more than 39 units with more than four beds.
An Bord Pleanála approved the proposals yesterday, with 28 conditions attached. The conditions include that the student accommodation should not be used for any other purpose without a prior grant of planning permission for change of use.
Now that approval has been granted, the project will be going out to tender next.
Avenir Homes director, Mark Cunningham expects it will take six months to prepare the tender documents, with construction to start in spring 2023.
He admits the inflated cost of materials adds a degree of uncertainty to the project.
Mr. Cunningham - a former Athlone IT student himself - says he'd like to see inflation fall by 15-20% before they start construction.
The student element of the project is his top priority:
