MEP "Bowled Over" By Quality Of Midlands Young Scientists

Joshua Corbett of CBS Portlaoise with MEP Ciaran Mullooly

Midlands North West MEP Ciaran Mullooly is raving about the standard of this year's exhibition.

"The creativity and determination of these young scientists from Laois is truly inspiring."

That's according to Midlands North West MEP Ciaran Mullooly who is at the BY Young Scientist Exhibition this week.

The Independent Ireland rep is making specific reference to a number of projects including that of CBS Portlaoise student Joshua Corbett's.

"Breaking Barriers: Revolutionising the Treatment of Brain Diseases", tackles the challenge of crossing the blood-brain barrier, a major obstacle in treating diseases such as Glioblastoma.

Mr Mullooly says beyond Joshua's work, he's been stunned at the quality of the exhibition:

A new method of cleaning cattle drinkers has been devised by Westmeath students in this year's BT Young Scientist Exhibition.

Moate Community School's Aoife Howlin and Ally Duffy came up with the idea for a tree nut water filter to help clean out algae and and bacteria.

Ally says they would like to see the idea implemented on a global scale:

A group of Wesmeath students have come up with a new product to help protect from the impact of UV lamps used in nail salons.

At this year's BT Young Scientist Exhibition, three students from Moate Community Schools have created a base coat to help defend nails from the harmful effects of the lamps.

Member of the group, Aoibh Larkin says they have ideas to further improve in the product:

A Westmeath project in this year's BT Young Scientist Exhibition took inspiration from an ancient mummified body.

Katie Creggy, Aoife Ross and Katie Ann McHugh are taking the fungus birch polypore trees and using it to treat ringworm in cattle.

Aoife says the idea was born after a trip to Italy:

A new piece of technology has been designed by Westmeath students to harness swells close to the seashore to generate power.

The Swellerator is a design by Gavin Quilty and Fionn Murphy for display at the BY Young Scientist Exhibition.

Gavin says the initial idea came from watching ocean waves:
