Nearly 200 People Were Homeless In The Midlands In October

The latest Homelessness Report shows a minor reduction in the number of people accessing emergency accommodation in the region.

Just under 200 people were homeless in the midlands last month.

The latest homelessness report shows the figure of 197 is a reduction of five on the figure for September.

59 adults accessed emergency accommodation in Westmeath in October, the highest number in the region.

That's followed by a figure of 49 in Offaly, and 34 in Laois, which was the only county in the region to see an increase in the number of homeless people when compared to September.

55 children in the midlands were without permanent accommodation last month.

Nationally, over 13,000 people were registered as homeless in October, which is an increase of over 350 on the figure in September.

That figure also includes 4,000 children.

The figures released by the Department of Housing do not include refugees, asylum seekers, women in refuge centres or rough sleepers.

The Simon Communities of Ireland is demanding action to tackle the escalating issue, with its Executive Director, Wayne Stanley, saying he believes the figures could be even higher:
