The 59-year-old has been appointed by Pope Francis.

A new Bishop has been appointed to the Diocese of Ossory.

Niall Coll, who's 59 years old, has been appointed to the role by Pope Francis.

He is the Parish Priest in Tawnawilly and Clar in the the Diocese of Raphoe.

The Donegal man, who was born on 25 August 1963 in Letterkenny, spent three years as a lecturer in St Patrick’s College in Carlow in the mid 1990s.

Speaking this morning, he said "Please know that I am as surprised as you that I find myself standing before you this morning as the future Bishop of Ossory. Coming as I do from the mainly soccer culture of east Donegal, my knowledge of hurling, that game so close to Kilkenny and Laois hearts, will test very few of you.

Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin Denis Nulty had been serving as Apostolic Administrator for the Diocese, which includes Aghaboe, Borris in Ossory, Castletown, Durrow,  Rathdowney and Seir Kieran.

Archbishop Dermot Farrell, Archbishop of Dublin says he warmly welcomes the appointment by Pope Francis of Father Niall Coll of the Diocese of Raphoe as Bishop of Ossory.  "I congratulate Bishop-elect Coll, and wish him every blessing as he commences his new ministry among the people, religious, and priests of Ossory."

The Westmeath man also says "Bishop-elect Coll brings with him a wealth of experience both in Diocese of Raphoe and in Saint Mary's University College, Belfast, as he begins to serve the people of Ossory and those who minister among them.  From first-hand experience, I am confident that he will be warmly welcomed in Ossory.  My own time in Ossory was a time of great blessing, and I wish Father Coll even greater blessing and happiness as he prepares for his new ministry. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bishop Denis Nulty for his dedicated service as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Ossory for the past twenty-one months."
