A midlands senator is floating the idea of a fee to support all media, not just RTÉ.
Longford's Micheál Carrigy has proposed 50% of that could go to the State Broadcaster. a quarter will be used to fund an enhanced Sound and Vision scheme, while 25% would be available for all media, local and national.
The Oireachtas Media Committee was divided yesterday on a report's recommendation to abolish the TV license fee.
However, Senator Carrigy says he believes people would be happy to pay a charge for their local media:
