Sean Maher Wins In Birr To Deliver Third Offaly Seat For Sinn Fein

Maher made it across the line ahead of Clare Claffey of the Social Democrats.

After four days of counts and recounts, Sean Maher of Sinn Fein has elected to the Birr Local Electoral Area.

Maher made it home ahead of Social Democrats Councillor Clare Claffey.

The result, following a recount, means Sinn Fein once again have three councillors on Offaly County Council after losing all three seats in the last local election in 2019.

Despite the Sinn Fein comeback, Fianna Fail and Fine Gael are reflecting on successful campaigns.

Fianna Fail managed to return eight councillors once again, including four in the Tullamore area, while Fine Gael were in celebratory mood following Neil Feighery's pole topping performance in Tullamore, and Hugh Egan's success in Birr.

The final composition of the Offaly County Council will see eight representatives from Fianna Fail, five for Fine Gael, three from Sinn Fein, two Independents, and one councillor from Independent Ireland after the return of Fergus McDonelll in Edenderry.
