The Bishop of Galway and Clonfert, a diocese with 40 parishes, is predicting it will have only 20 priests within the next decade.
Bishop Michael Duignan is warning Ireland may soon become like the UK, where funerals take weeks to arrange because of the shortage of priests to conduct the service.
Fr. Paddy Byrne says the shortages are being felt right across the country, something which puts pressure on older and retired clergy:
