The incident occurred in December 2015.
A man is beginning a three year jail sentence tonight after a botched medical procedure on a ten month old boy in Longford four-and-a half-years- ago.
The child was hospitalised for two weeks after Philip Ogbewe, of Green Lanes, Drogheda, Co. Louth, carried out a circumcision without anaesthetic in December 2015.
Gardaí were first alerted to the incident in December 2015 when the baby was rushed to Mullingar hospital with serious bleeding.
The accused was paid €200 for the procedure which was carried out without anaesthetic and which was described by Judge Keenan Johnson as a "barbaric act of cruelty" and "shocking and unacceptable".
The boy's mother also believed the accused to be a real medical professional after he presented to their home with a medical bag and referred to himself as 'Dr Philip'.
He had been known in his community for carrying out circumcisions, since he was in his mid-teens, the court was told but was not approved to do so in Ireland.
The court heard the child has since made a full recovery and has suffered no long term ill effects from the incident.
Mr Ogbewe pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment of life by performing the circumcision on the baby and was today jailed for four years - with the final year suspended
