UN Team To Visit Sudan Today

Fighting between the Sudanese army and a rival militia group are continuing for control of the country.

A United Nations team is set to visit Sudan today, as fighting there enters its third week.

It will assess the deteriorating humanitarian conditions, as the Sudanese army and a rival militia group continue to battle for control of the country.

There's growing concern about a refugee crisis: the UN says around 73,000 people have already fled the country with many more still attempting to leave.

Security and defence analyst, Mullingar's Declan Power says it has a major knock-on effect across many regions:

The UN refugee agency has warned those fleeing the violence in Sudan could surpass 800,000.

Tánaiste Micheál Martin has tweeted that 246 Irish citizens and their families have now been evacuated.

He also called for an end to the civil war so "humanitarian aid can reach those who need it most."

The UN's humanitarian coordinator says the conflict is turning a humanitarian crisis into a "full blown catastrophe."

Meanwhile, Cork's Sudanese Community is fundraising to send humanitarian aid to the war-torn country.

Dr. Osama Ali is the General Secretary of the Cork Sudanese Association.

He says there's a large community from the Northeast African country in Cork, and they're working to raise funds:
