Businesses in Mullingar are being encouraged to apply for an extended outdoor seating licence.
Westmeath County Council has approved the public domain may be used for outdoor seating for cafés and restaurants.
The usual €100 fee for the licence has been waived.
Green Party councillor Hazel Smyth - who's behind the idea - says it will offer extra space for businesses during covid-19, while also creating a more vibrant atmosphere in the town.
She says it's geared towards Market Square and Dominic Street in particular - spaces that would have been used for the now cancelled Fleadh Cheoil:
