Westmeath Man Facing Trial On Dangerous Driving Charge

The incident took place Rathowen village in the early hours of March 23rd last year.

A man is set to stand trial accused of dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm after a high speed crash in Westmeath.

23 year old Gerard Duffy McAndrew of Ben View, Rathcorbally, Monilea, Westmeath was in court in Mullingar yesterday charged in connection with the incident.

The incident took place Rathowen village in the early hours of March 23rd last year and led to a young man losing a limb.

Two men aged in the early 20s were left with serious injuries in Tullamore's Regional Hospital.

The Irish Independent is reporting Garda Mervyn Henson gave evidence of having served a book of evidence on Mr Duffy McAndrews.

While Judge Bernadette Owens commented that his work trousers and black zipped up top were not of a satisfactory nature.

Mr Duffy McAndrew's solicitor, David Nohilly replied by saying his client had been at his place of work prior to his arrival.

Mr Nohilly asked for both a junior and senior counsel to represent Mr Duffy McAndrew owing to the seriousness of the charge and the fact the injured party in the case had lost a limb.

Judge Owens granted the request, told the defendant of his requirement to notify the State of any alibi evidence he wished to rely on during the course of the trial, and remanded him bail to appear before a sitting of Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court tomorrow.
