The Health Service is accepting its historic performance on finance has fallen short.
Hospitals in the Midlands are spending hundreds of thousands of euro on debt collectors to chase patients for unpaid bills.
Since 2013 just under €860,000 has been spent from 2013 to 2022 by the Midlands Regional Hospitals in Offaly, Westmeath, and Laois.
Tullamore Hospital has spent the most at €342,975, followed by Mullingar at €265,566, while €251,164 has been spent pursuing debt collection for Portlaoise.
Nationally over €5.5m has been spent trying to recoup owed fees.
The HSE says the shortcomings of their legacy financial systems are well acknowledged and their replacement by a single standard financial system is being brought in by the Department of Health.
