Hospitals in the Midlands are spending hundreds of thousands of euro on debt collectors to chase patients for unpaid bills.
Since 2013 just under €860,000 has been spent from 2013 to 2022 by the Midlands Regional Hospitals in Offaly, Westmeath, and Laois.
Tullamore Hospital has spent the most at €342,975, followed by Mullingar at €265,566, while €251,164 has been spent pursuing debt collection for Portlaoise.
Nationally over €5.5m has been spent trying to recoup owed fees.
The HSE says the shortcomings of their legacy financial systems are well acknowledged and their replacement by a single standard financial system is being brought in by the Department of Health.
