Housing MinisterJames Browne says a significant push is needed, as the State will miss its 2025 target.
Midlands county councils are being asked by the State to increase their housing stock significantly.
Local authorities in Laois, Offaly, and Westmeath have seen their respective housing supply targets increased by an average of 115%
The Housing Minister wants the councils to play their part in delivering a total of 83 thousand homes a year.
Minister James Browne has already conceded the government's overall target of 41 thousand in 2025 will be missed.
The Central Bank is predicting the State will be around 20% shy of that number.
