A 40 bed unit in Galway will cost the State €35m.
"The nursing home crisis is fast developing into a scandal of immense proportions."
That's according to Laois Offaly TD Carol Nolan after the Government approval €35.3m for the delivery of new 40 bed Community Nursing Unit in Clifden.
She says it equates to €883, 500 per bed, which is over 400 percent more than the cost of developing private nursing home beds in rural areas, which was €162,000 in 2022 - according to independent analysis by PWC of publicly available and sector participant data for Nursing Homes Ireland, the sectors main representative body.
She says "in fact, in rural Ireland the cost of developing a nursing home bed in rural Ireland in 2017 was €111k. however, in 2022 the cost had jumped by €51k to €162k.”
Independent Deputy, Nolan says it's incredibly alarming to note that rural and urban nursing home developments have experienced significant increases in development cost per bed over the last 5 years.
