There were over 100 more prisoners in custody than there were beds available at the Midlands Prison yesterday.
The 875-bed institution was at 112% capacity yesterday, with 978 inmates in custody, according to figures from the Irish Prison Service.
Portlaoise Prison was also overcrowded, registering a capacity of 102%.
